Piñatas — but bigger, and shinier. Justin Favela made a few adjustments to his usual process when creating his “Capilla de Maíz (Maize Chapel)” in the Grand Salon of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery. Shimmering gold and green Mylar stepped in for paper and cardboard, the traditional cartonería or piñata making materials, for this large-scale sculpture installation. Justin Favela is a multidisciplinary artist of Guatemalan and Mexican heritage based in Las Vegas, Nevada. His mixed-media practice incorporates traditional Mexican and Latin American craft—specifically cartonería or piñata making—into large-scale sculptures and installations that meld art history with pop culture.
