Virtual "Subversive, Skilled, Sublime" Lecture with Mary Savig

Join Mary Savig, the Lloyd Herman Curator of Craft at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery, for a talk about the exhibition “Subversive, Skilled, Sublime: Fiber Art by Women.” In this virtual program, Savig explores the artists featured in the exhibition, who mastered everyday materials, subverted conventions, and transformed humble threads into sublime creations. She shares how the exhibition came together as a collaboration between SAAM and the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art, combining artworks in SAAM’s collection with archival materials and interviews held by the Archives. She also discusses themes of the exhibition, including the intersections between fiber arts and domestic work, and spotlights some of her favorite back stories. This program was presented virtually on Tuesday, July 11, 2024. For more information on the exhibition, visit https://americanart.si.edu/exhibitions/fiber-art-by-women.
